FAQ

What is Biothane?

It is a very high quality waterproof webbing. Strong, flexible, and odour-free, it’s perfect for everyday adventures. Made from a polyester core with a TPU coating, it’s waterproof, non-stretch, colour fast, and easy to clean.

A cruelty-free alternative to leather.

How strong is Biothane?

Biothane is extremely strong and durable~ It’s built to handle even the most active dogs, with a break strength that rivals leather. It won’t stretch, crack, or fray, even in wet or muddy conditions-making it perfect for everyday adventures.

The tensile strength for the various widths are:

  • 16mm upto 340kg tensile strength.
  • 19mm upto 450kg tensile strength.
  • 25mm upto 680kg tensile strength.
  • 38mm upto 850kg tensile strength.
Why do you use Chicago screws instead of rivets?

We choose Chicago screws for their strength, reliability, and long-lasting performance. They create a more secure connection than standard rivets, making them ideal for collars designed to withstand all adventures.

For added security, each individual screw is thread-locked too.

How do I clean my Biothane products?

Wash with warm, soapy water, rinse, and dry with a soft cloth. For heavy dirt, soak briefly and scrub gently with a damp soft cloth. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.

Brass hardware: May tarnish naturally. To polish, use lemon juice and baking soda, then wipe dry.

Is Biothane suitable for dogs with sensitive skin/allergies?

Biothane is ideal because it is hypoallergenic and non-porous, meaning it doesn’t absorb moisture, dirt, or bacteria that can cause irritation or allergic reactions.

What size collar should I order?

Measure your dog’s neck with a soft tape, leaving room for two fingers (placed on top of each other, not side by side) between the tape and the neck. If your dog is near the top of a size, choose the next size up and leave the exact measurement in your order notes for a custom fit.

Sizes:

  • XS: 8-12”
  • S: 10-14”
  • M: 12-16”
  • L: 15-20”
  • XL: 19-24”
Can I have something different from what is listed?

With so many options and custom details available, every collar and lead can be made truly your own.

If you’d like something you don’t see listed - for example, a roller buckle instead of a bar buckle, no ID tag loop, or any other adjustment - please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’re always happy to help, where possible.

What is a half-slip collar?

A half slip collar (also known as a Martingale collar) gently tightens when your dog pulls, giving you a bit more control without the full tightening of a traditional slip or choke collar.

It’s designed to sit comfortably and securely, preventing dogs from slipping out while still being kind on the neck. When fitted correctly, it loosens easily when tension is released - combining safety, comfort, and style.

How long will my order take to make?

Most custom orders ship within 7-10 working days but some may take up to 2 - 3 weeks, subject to material stock availability.

How long do orders take to arrive?

UK orders are sent via Royal Mail Tracked 48 and usually arrive 2-4 business days after dispatch.

Do you deliver internationally?

We are currently only shipping to the UK.

Why do some of the collars have two metal loops?

Having two metal loops on a dog collar - one for the leash and one for the ID tag - has several practical benefits:

  • Safety and Security: Separation of functions: The lead clip and ID tag aren’t sharing the same ring, so there’s less chance of the tag getting caught, twisted, or broken off during walks.
  • Reduced risk of accidental unclipping: When both are on one ring, a lead clip can accidentally push against the tag split ring and unclip - having two loops prevents that.
  • Ease of Use: It’s quicker to clip and unclip the lead without fumbling around or moving tags out of the way.
  • Durability and Wear: Constant lead pressure on the same ring as the ID tag can wear the engraving on the tag over time.Less Noise: With the ID tag on its own ring there’s less jingling when the leash moves or the dog walks.
Why are handmade dog collars and leads better than industrially made ones?

Handmade collars are made with care and attention to detail. They can be customised to suit you and your dog. Using high quality materials, durable and fairly priced makes for sustainable production.

Plus, you’re supporting small makers who truly care about quality and your dogs comfort.
